
Barbara Slater Stern has taught a variety of social studies courses at the high school level including United States History, World History, European Culture Studies, African-American History, and A.P. U.S. History. She has been an A.P. Reader for the U.S. History exam. She is an active member of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) and has presented in-service and staff development sessions at NCSS, the Virginia Council of the Social Studies and the James Madison University Summer Standards of Learning Content Academy. She served on the ISTE NETS2 writing team focusing on integrating technology into social studies lessons and has presented a workshop for NCSS at the National Education Computing Conference (NECC). She has served on the NCSS Research and Instruction committees. She has a B.A. from the University of Rhode Island in Social Sciences and Secondary Education, an M.A. from the University of Louisville in Higher Education, and an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Central Florida. She is currently a professor at James Madison University in the Department of Middle, Secondary and Mathematics Education where she teaches Methods of Teaching Social Studies in Secondary Schools, Curriculum and Foundations of Education courses.
