Chris Hitch serves as Program Director for Federal and Government Programs at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He has consulted, designed, and delivered executive development programs for senior executives in the Department of Defense and other federal government leaders. Much of his work has focused on leadership development, transitions, and accelerating the success of newly promoted senior leaders. He has over 25 years experience in the local, state, corporate, non-profit, and governmental sectors. At UNC, Chris has worked with over 700 flag officers, SES, and other senior leaders in the federal government.
Chris served as a principal and chief HR Director in the public schools. He spent 15 years as a teacher and principal for three turn-around schools and served as Director of Human Resources and Accountability Director for a small North Carolina school district where over 20 different languages were listed as the native language. He designed and delivered executive development for over 4500 senior school leaders at the North Carolina’s Principal Executive Program and the North Carolina’s Principal Fellows Program.
He has been a frequent presenter at state and national conferences on leadership and management topics, focusing on how to translate research into practical tools for executives. Chris is the author of several articles in the regional and national press and is the author of two books: Conversations with NC Principals (2008), where all proceeds go to a North Carolina orphanage, and Executive Skills for Busy School Leaders, which was published in 2010.
Chris received his B.A. and M.A. from Austin College and his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He earned the Certified Management Consultant designation from the Institute of Management Consultants in 2008, a designation held by less than 1% of management consultants in the U.S. An avid outdoorsman, Chris has been a basketball referee and now spends as much of his free time as possible with his family or fly-fishing.
He and his wife, April, have been married for 27 years and have two adult children.
