
Douglas L. Hartley, Ph.D., is currently an assistant principal at Tabb High School in the York County School Division in Yorktown, Virginia. Doug began his career as a high school science teacher and further worked with student athletes as a football, wrestling, and track coach in two of the division’s high schools. He was nominated by his students to the Who’s Who Among American Teachers for his passion for teaching and rapport with students. Doug has served as an assistant principal in three of the division’s four high schools under the direction of five different principals. Doug works within his school and school division to train teachers and paraeducators on academic management strategies that promote student engagement and improve student behavior.
Dr. Hartley was the sole winner of the 2007 Edgar L. Morphett award given by the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration (NCPEA) recognizing his dissertation as the most outstanding in the field of educational administration. He was recognized and provided a presentation at the NCPEA annual conference in Chicago during the summer of 2007. His dissertation was also selected as a distinguished paper by the Virginia Educational Research Association (VERA) and by the American Educational Research Association (AERA), where he was recognized and presented at both the annual state and national conferences. Dr. Hartley earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Science from Longwood College (now Longwood University), Master’s Degree in Education and Human Development from George Washington University, and Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech).
