Ellen began her career as a classroom teacher (20 years) and then as elementary principal (7 years) and central office administrator (5 years) before moving to Brigham Young University’s department of Educational Leadership and Foundations where she co-directs two programs: Leadership Preparation and the BYU Principals’ Academy. Ellen’s work and her publications focus on two areas for improving schools: Assessing the culture of professional learning communities (PLCs) and instructional leadership. She is co-author of "You Can Control Your Classroom" and has published in such scholarly journals as Mentoring and Tutoring: Partnership in Learning, Education and Urban Society, the UCEA Journal of Cases in Educational Leadership, The Researcher, and the International Journal of Leadership in Education. Ellen and colleagues are pioneering the development and validation of the Learning Community Culture Indicator (LCCI) to assess the presence of research-based elements found in PLCs.
