Gail Lynn Goldberg is an educational consultant who works with schools, school systems, and state educational agencies to promote effective instruction and the implementation of meaningful classroom assessment practices. Prior to becoming an independent consultant nine years ago, she worked for a decade as an assessment specialist with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE)—first directing the Maryland Writing Test (MWT) and then in a leadership role with the Maryland School Performance Assessment Program (MSPAP)—experiences which deepened her appreciation for the ways assessment can be a window into teaching and learning. Dr. Goldberg has published numerous articles on assessment, instructional practice, and literacy in such journals as Applied Measurement in Education, Educational Assessment, and Assessing Writing. She is co-author (with Barbara Sherr Roswell) of Reading, Writing, and Gender (Eye on Education, 2002), a work that combines research on gender and literacy learning with practical strategies for helping girls and boys become better readers and writers. Since the publication of that book, Dr. Goldberg has continued to conduct research on gender and literacy and to provide leadership in the development and implementation of a wide variety of formative and summative assessments—and related instructional resources—in such areas as reading, writing, fine arts, and technology.
