Howard Johnston is Professor of Secondary Education at the University of South Florida. Previously, he served as a professor of education, dean of education and dean of the graduate school of education at the University of Cincinnati. He has authored over 150 works on education and has presented more than 2000 invited papers, lectures, and keynote addresses in all 50 U.S. states, across Canada, and in more than a dozen countries in Europe, South America, Asia, and the Caribbean. In addition to numerous books, he has published in virtually all of the major professional and scholarly journals devoted to teaching, learning and leadership. Howard received his BA and MA from the State University of New York and his Ph. D. from the University of Wyoming.
Howard is the recipient of the National Association of Secondary School Principals' Distinguished Service Award, the National Middle School Association's Presidential Award for Excellence, the Gruhn-Long Award for lifetime service to middle-level education, and NMSA's John Lounsbury Award for lifetime achievement. He has served on the Board of Trustees of the National Middle School Association and the Council on Middle Level Education for the National Association of Secondary School Principals. In addition to his extensive consulting work with school districts and other educational agencies, he is currently engaged in a unique program to provide personalized professional development for principals in Oregon GEAR UP schools.
