"Being involved with Yvelyne on our book is one of the highlights of my long career in education!" reports Katharine Owens, co-author of Mathematics and Multi-Ethnic Students: Exemplary Practices. Majoring in mathermatics in college (Nazareth College of Rochester, NY) followed an early interest in the subject (she was president of her high school's math club, for example). Katharine (Kathie) started out teaching mathematics in junior high and, after getting her masters’ degree in science education at Texas A & M University quickly found another love, teaching science in middle schools both in New York State and in Mississippi (Ed.D., University of Southern Mississippi). When she was chosen as a Mississippi finalist in the Teacher in Space program and later as a Christa McAuliffe Fellow, she knew that for the rest of her teaching career, science and mathematics together would dominate both her work with K-12 students and with their teachers. Currently, Kathie focuses on teacher education in mathematics and science at the University of Akron (appointment began in 1997) where she teaches methods courses to future teachers, supervises student teachers, develops and evaluates curriculum. Recently she spent over two months in Nigeria learning how math teachers make their curriculum relevant to their students. She has been married to Clarence for over 30 years and they have two sons. When she’s away from her teaching job and education projects she’s traveling around the USA to add to her rock collection, tending her garden, or whipping up some goodies in the kitchen. She reports that retirement isn't in the picture just yet because she's just having too much fun!
