ABOUT PAM BREWER
A North Carolina native, Pam Brewer is a 14-year veteran high school teacher of
English, journalism, and drama. For the past 10 years, Pam has served as
Assistant Principal for Instruction at Person High School in Roxboro, North
Carolina. She is a Meredith College graduate and holds a masters degree in
English from North Carolina State University and principal’s certification from
the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has trained district staff
in implementing the effective schools process, learning styles research,
Socratic Seminar, as well as leading the school’s successful restructuring
movement to a 4/4 block schedule in 1993. With Mrs. Ball, she coauthored the
Socratic Seminar chapter in Canady and Rettig’s Teaching in the Block:
Strategies for Engaging Active Learners and was also featured in the Video
Journal’s treatment of “High School Alternative Scheduling.” (Vol. 4, issue 2) A
former North Carolina Teacher of the Year, Pam has presented many workshops on
the topics of school reform, high school block scheduling, successful strategies
for teaching in the 90-minute block, and Socratic questioning through
seminars--the single best strategy she knows for active, student-owned learning.
She sees Socratic seminar as a natural training for schools which value student
communication and are looking for strategies to enhance block scheduling.
