"Waiting for 'Superman'" was first shown in theaters in September 2010 and even before the release, the film became the center of educational debates and controversy. The movie, directed by Davis Guggenheim, portrayed some of the problems in American public education by following the lives of five students and their families as they struggle to achieve better schooling. There has been ongoing coverage of the film since Fall 2010 and the opinions are wide-ranging and strong. With the release of the DVD, the discussion has re-opened, including a post from The Huffington Post by Eye On Education author Franklin Schargel.

The Urban Ministries of Durham (UMD) is a non-profit organization located in Durham, North Carolina that provides food, clothing, shelter, and supportive services to the community’s homeless and indigent population. In 2001, the Durham Community Shelter for HOPE, St. Philip’s Community Café, and the United Methodist Mission Society joined together to become the Urban Ministries of Durham. Now UMD manages both the Urban Ministries Center, which was founded in 1983, and the Community Shelter next door and aids over 6,000 men, women, and children a year. Read more…
