The Eye On Education booth was abuzz all three days with attendees thumbing through our titles and learning about our Professional Services.

Waking to our smart phones, working on our computers, and falling asleep with our TVs, it should come as no surprise that the average American sees thousands of advertisements each day. Me llamo...” Another frequent response is something along the lines of, “Then you should call me ‘María’—that was my name in Spanish class!” Unfortunately, it seems that for every person I meet who happily shares her Spanish class name with me, another gives me some type of warning like, “I hope you don’t give your students Spanish names—I hated that!”

Movie Reel

What do you suppose the average person thinks when he or she pictures a typical teacher? Is that image true to life?

The media plays a major role in our perceptions of the world and of ourselves. Although teachers and other educators have a longstanding presence on the big screen, they are often portrayed within the molds of stereotypical bad-teacher or idealized super-teacher.

As a former teacher in a large urban school district, I remember being evaluated like it was yesterday. On the day of an evaluation, the principal would walk into my classroom with her checklist, pen and clipboard, sit at the back of the room, and observe. Some of my students would ask why she was sitting there while others just ignored her. I tried hard to focus on the lesson and quietly breathed a sigh of relief when she left. Much like the contestants on American Idol, it felt as though my entire career as a teacher was being judged on 45 minutes.
