Barbara BlackburnDr. Barbara Blackburn on Rigor
Blackburn has dedicated her life to raising the level of rigor and motivation for professional educators and students alike. What differentiates Barbara’s 12 books are her easily executable concrete examples based on decades of experience as a teacher, professor, and consultant.

The interview was recorded in November 2011 and the runtime is 12:29. Select podcast highlghts include:

2:00: We cannot assume that simply adopting the Common Core State Standards makes for rigorous classrooms. Rigor is more than what you teach. It is how you teach.

2:15: What is rigor?

3:15: What should school leaders look for in a rigorous classroom?

4:15: Is an increased emphasis on rigor simply setting up our students for failure?

5:45: How can students demonstrate learning at high levels?

8:15: Rigor is for every single student, not just the gifted and not just those enrolled in AP classes, and it does not exclude students with special needs.

Would like know, how can a substitute teacher learn all about Rigor/?and make use of the higher learning rigor if substitues are never trained on this process. Also how can I contact Dr. Barbara Blackburn directly.

That's a great question! It is so important for everyone to be on the same page. Ideally, regular subs for a school can participate in some training (I've had that happen in my workshops). Unfortunately, that doesn't happen, or you have so many subs. I'd recommend leaving a one page cover sheet with key tips on it for the sub about incorporating rigor. Tips can be as simple as:
When you ask a student a question, and they answer, immediately follow up with why or how.
Will that take care of everything? No, but it is a start. And you can contact me through my website, www.barbarablackburnonline.com. I'd love to hear from you, and if you develop a one pager for subs, I'd also like to include it in my next book, A Rigor Toolkit for Teachers. It's very cool to see your name and idea in print!
