Earlier this month, I attended the International Reading Association’s 57th Annual Convention, held this year in Chicago. The event brings together educators and educational publishers from across the country to share best practices and resources. I was accompanied by Eye On Education’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Annamarie Cerreta. We had a great time! Here are some highlights from our trip.

Each April, National Autism Awareness Month is recognized in order to bring awareness to the public about autism and the issues faced within the autism community.

According to the latest report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1 in 88 children has an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). As “spectrum disorders,” ASDs affect different people in different ways, and while people with ASDs share certain symptoms — such as challenges with social interactions or communication — they often experience those symptoms to varying extents.

The New York City Department of Education recently came out with a list of words that they want to ban from standardized tests. The list includes dinosaur, Halloween, birthday, divorce, politics, rap music, cigarettes, religion, and rock & roll, as well as certain food words.

I understand the need for sensitivity when designing tests. Before joining Eye On Education, I was Director of English at a company that publishes test-prep workbooks for secondary students. When my colleagues and I chose reading passages and wrote questions for the sample tests, we were careful not to choose readings that would upset students. For example, we avoided middle school reading selections about someone whose pet died.
