Now that you’ve satisfied your sweet tooth on Halloween, it’s time to feed your brain. National Family Literacy Day is held annually on November 1. This year, libraries and community centers around the country are hosting over 8,000 literacy programs. These programs include read-a-thons and book drives to help engage students in reading, workshops, and family activities. The event, started by ReadWriteThink and first held in 1994, was created in response to the high percentage of American adults scoring in the lowest level on the literacy scale. The goal was to get people and their families engaged in reading together.

RE:FORM SCHOOL, an art exhibition, national art contest, performance, and public awareness campaign, took place Friday, October 9th to Monday, October 11th in New York City. Held at St. Patrick's school, RE:FORM SCHOOL requested the following of the general public, "We would like to invite you to join together with many of today’s top contemporary artists, hundreds of volunteers, sponsors and grass roots organizers to send a loud message that the time has come to fix our ailing public school system."

Education has recently become one of America’s hottest topics. Davis Guggenheim’s much anticipated documentary “Waiting for ‘Superman’”
was at the center of educational debates and controversy even before its opening on September 24th. The film, which follows five young children struggling to get a better education, has been celebrated for revealing the problems in American education, but also criticized for its depiction of charter schools as heroes and teachers’ unions as villains.
