Vocabulary at the Beginning: Vocabulary at the Center

Originally Aired:  Thursday, September 8, 2011

Vocabulary instruction is everybody’s business. As stated in the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, students must be able to "read, write, speak, listen, and use language effectively across the content areas."

In this webinar, Amy Benjamin will provide effective instructional strategies that guarantee genuine understanding and long term retention. She will also provide attendees with a list of the sure-fire, non-negotiable academic words that appear consistently in all academic texts and conversations.

Participants will leave with:

  • a clear understanding of what it means to “know” a word
  • the essentials of vocabulary acquisition through both explicit and implicit instruction
  • how to make informed choices about which words to target specific instruction
  • practical action items that will result in durable vocabulary growth
  • engaging strategies to keep vocabulary at the center throughout the year

Who Should Attend

Teachers, administrators and instructional leaders of all grade levels and disciplines looking for new ways to expand the vocabulary students use to communicate clearly and effectively.
