ABOUT NELSON BEAUDOIN

Nelson Beaudoin, is currently the principal of Kennebunk High School in Maine. A thirty-six year educator, he has led two high schools through successful Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration grants. Student Voice was used as a leverage point in both schools to advance reform initiatives linked to Maine’s high school restructuring movement called Promising Futures. Leavitt Area High School and Kennebunk High School have received national recognition in areas that relate to student voice. Leavitt was named a National Service Learning Leader School in 2001 and Kennebunk was recognized as a First Amendment Project School 2003. In part because of his work in the area of student voice, Beaudoin was selected as Maine's 2000 NASSP Principal of the Year. His school’s work on student voice was featured as the cover article in the September, 2005, issue of Teacher Magazine and also published in the May 2006 issue of Educational Leadership. His work with the First Amendment School Project was covered in a February 21, 2006, article in the Washington Post. He is the author of two books on educational leadership; Stepping Outside Your Comfort Zone: Lessons for School Leaders (Eye on Education, 2004) and Elevating Student Voice: How to Enhance Participation Leadership and Citizenship (Eye on Education, 2005). His work was also featured in the May, 2006, issue of Educational Leadership. He has been presenting at conferences and workshops throughout the country since 1998 on educational topics such as student voice, school reform, inspirational leadership, and school change.
